the power of stillness

Last week was the first edition of this year’s Rhythms and Blooms, an event held at the local botanic gardens during the evening after work, when they are normally closed. Last week was a long one for me, due to being so busy both at work and personally. Most people have a place where they slow down and relax, step back and get perspective on things. For me, that happens to be the local botanic gardens, and I love being there at night, because I get different photos than I do during the day.

As I was walking around the gardens, I just let go of my thoughts, allowed all the junk from the outside world fall away and entered into the moment. I returned to my life, and to my power, in a manner of speaking. I am an admitted follower of the Law of Attraction (LOA), The basic idea behind this is the universal of law of what you pay attention to is what you attract. The idea is simple, but the expession of this idea, at times, can be highly complex. I want to focus on one particular aspect of that for a moment. LOA experts tell us that we must fill our minds with gratitude for the things we want, and to work towards getting them to the best of our ability.

What most fail to address though, is how to make more room for those thoughts in our already overcrowded minds. One LOA expert who lived and passed before my time was Wallace Wattles, who said it was not necessary to do anything special, to go into the silence or other special exercises to put it into action. And on one level he is correct. And now I’m going to tell you why meditation has the ability to supercharge the attraction of anything into your life.

I’ve told you meditation, but really, anything that produces stillness of mind has that ability. Artists call it being in the flow, Zen practtitioners call it living in the moment. Athletes call it being in the zone. Whatever you choose to call it, it’s a very powerful state of consciousness. It’s powerful because thought tends to fall away. Much as whispers become audible and more powerful in the silence, so our thoughts become more powerful when they are not competing with other thoughts. From a LOA pespective, the thoughts you think when you think less become more powerful – there are fewer thoughts to divide your power into, and fewer or no thoughts opposing the thoughts of what you want to attract.

Maybe the best explanation is this. Think of your thoughts as being drops of food color that are dropped in a glass of water, and the thought you have would turn the water green. But, when you have lots of thoughts, many colors are dropped in the water and instead of green, you have a dark murky glass, where it’s difficult to see any individual color at all. But if you take that glass and put only a few drops in it that are green or close to green, it’s easy to see the green coloration in the water – the desired outcome.

It’s not that thoughts lack strength, but that their power is diminished by so many that run at counter currents to each other. And that’s really where the power of stillness shines. Your thoughts don’t get in the way of each other, They can go from thought to completion with significantly less opposition because you’re allowing them to.

This may be as difficult a topic to write about as it is to read it, but it is very important to understand. Yes, LOA is always in play, both good and bad. Stillness can take LOA to the next level, if you are willing to let it.
