my new garden
After 5 days of vacation in which the weather was crappy for 4 of them, I went back to work today. This afternoon when I got home, I went outside and pulled most of the remnants of last year’s weeds from the garden area.
I know what I said about focusing only on taking the black belt test in August, but this is a garden - one of the things I want to do more than anything. So I decided I’m going to have a garden this year. I’ve also decided to write about the experience, at first it will be part of a new blog I’m going to establish, I’ve already bought the domain name - mysouthcarolinagarden.com. It’ll take me a week or two to get the site up, but once I do I’ll have information for it, starting with this afternoon’s activities.
I have a feeling this is going to turn into something important for me, whether it stays as just a blog or morphs into something else. I love gardening and growing plants - I have for a long time. And while I may never be a farmer, that’s ok, I’m not sure I’m cut out to be a farmer. But there’s a lot of ways to work with and around plants besides being a farmer. This garden is just one step down a path in a new direction. Last year I tried to have a garden and failed miserably. So I’ll take what I learned last year, add on to it and try it again.
There’s a few things I want to do this year that I didn’t necessarily do last year. First, I want my garden to be as much of an heirloom garden as possible. That means only plants that are true to seed - the seeds I harvest from the plants should grow the same kind of plants, year after year. There will be herbs and vegetables, and maybe some flowers as well. I haven’t had a chance to plan out everything I want to grow, but I will be doing that this week, and probably getting the seed ordered so I can get it planted soon.
Listen to me, babbling on and on, so unlike me. I’m excited about this - excited in a different way than I’m used to. I can’t wait to see what happens this year.
