computer change

I’ve been looking at things lately, and there’s something about which I’m unhappy.  Well, rather than turn this into a rant, I’m going to do something about it.  You see, lately I’ve been checking my email more often, about once an hour while I’m home or at work.  I don’t get that many emails, only a couple people email me with any regularity.  But it begs the question - what did I do before email, and why do I check it so often?

In my quest to watch less tv, I find that I’ve substituted the computer for at least part of it, though lately my tv viewing has gone up too.  So, my goal is to stop spending so much time at the computer and more time doing other stuff, and to break my habit of checking my email so frequently.

This is something I can do.  To help change this issue, I’ve decided that one day a week I’m not going to turn my computer on at all, if possible.  Right now I’m thinking about Saturdays as being a completely computer free day.  I’ve had days where I didn’t turn it on at all, and I felt absolutely wonderful at the end of the day.  Well, now I’m looking to break a bad habit - one that should be fairly easy to break, as habits go.

I haven’t done much writing lately either.  I haven’t figured out if that’s because I don’t want to, or I just don’t want to on the computer.  I started a novel almost a decade ago - it’s still unfinished, though I have written quite a bit on it.  None of it is in the computer.  It’s all paper.  I’m not sure why, but writing on paper seems more natural to me than sitting here typing.  transcribing is fine, but for really creative work, I’ll take pen and paper over keyboard and monitor 7 days a week.  Not sure why, I just do.  Oh, and I like really fine pens too - maybe I was an author in another life.

I’m not sure when I’m going to start this yet.  This coming week is my dojo’s martial arts seminar.  Four days of awesomeness starts Thursday morning, and it’s quite likely I won’t get to turn on the pc for at least a couple days.  I’ll be quite busy or quite tired, so I’m not counting on turning it on Thursday, Friday, or Saturday, though I’m thinking I probably will.

Anyway, change is coming, change for the better.
