urban oddities
I decided at the last minute to change the title of this piece, which was originally going to be titled “single women don’t drive suv’s”, but I know from personal experience that’s not true. So I was going to make it ’single women don’t drive suv’s unless they’re moms’, but that’s too long and sounds stupid, so urban oddities it is.
Really I just wanted to take a few minutes and make a few observations about dating and life in American culture. I’ve reached the conclusion that if car companies really wanted to increase their suv sales, they’d start gearing their commercials towards women. Let’s face it, guy’s aren’t the ones driving them most of the time. Guy meets girl, they get married, and have kids. If they don’t already have one, what’s one of the first things they buy once a kid has arrived? An suv. The commercials talk about cargo space, and seating capacity, stuff that guys care about. But let’s face it - if you take off from work during the week and go drive around town, there’s a pretty good chance you’re going to see more suv’s on the road rather than cars, because the single women are working too.
Which makes for an interesting dilemma for us guys. There doesn’t seem to be an easy way to determine if a woman is dateable, but there are any number of ways to easily figure out that a woman is unavailable. Suvs are one way. If I see a woman around an suv, I don’t even look twice - she’s either wearing a ring on her finger, or has kids - either way I’m not interested.
Why can’t Detroit produce a car that says hey, I’m single, rather than one that says hey, I’m unavailable?

You’re so funny. But, you’re doing yourself and many single women a great disservice. There are LOTS of single women with SUVs and those women don’t necessarily have children–at least they don’t necessarily have children young enough to interfere with dating…
