Sunday, August 31st, 2008I actually started writing this post some weeks ago, and it’s changed a bit since then, as I’ve had other thoughts that have made me reconsider what I was originally going to say.
I actually started writing this post some weeks ago, and it’s changed a bit since then, as I’ve had other thoughts that have made me reconsider what I was originally going to say.
I decided at the last minute to change the title of this piece, which was originally going to be titled “single women don’t drive suv’s”, but I know from personal experience that’s not true. So I was going to make it ’single women don’t drive suv’s unless they’re moms’, but that’s too long and sounds stupid, so urban oddities it is.
It is my privilege to announce that at jujitsu class tonight, I was promoted to the rank of nikyu, 2nd degree brown belt! I am one step closer to achieving my black belt and beginning the real work.
Last night, after spending all day in restorative therapy class, I went to a social dance, for the third, and likely, final time. For the last three months I’ve been taking beginning ballroom dancing lessons on Tuesday nights, and it’s been enjoyable, but I haven’t actually used any of my learning outside of class. In other words, all I’ve done during those three social dances was sit and watch. Last night really just confirmed for me what I already knew - I don’t really fit into the crowd of people that go dancing, dancing really isn’t my thing either, and I’m really just a perpetual student.
For those of you who haven’t been reading the blog for long, I had four main goals I wanted to accomplish this year, and they were ambitious. The first I gave up on months ago, there simply wasn’t any time to work on it. Now I find myself in the position of having to give up on a second one as well.
One of the reasons I have not written very often is my new Tuesday night activity, beginner ballroom dancing lessons. I started in June with Foxtrot and East Coast Swing lessons, did 4 weeks of Latin dancing last month, some ChaCha, Rumba, and Salsa, and this month is Waltz and East Coast Swing in two different classes, which has turned out to be a bit much to handle for one night at my current fitness level, or lack thereof.
So I started my first batch of habit changes last weekend, with less than spectacular results. By the end of the week, things were back to the status quo, pushed a little bit here and a little bit there by external circumstances. I should say, I allowed myself to be pushed back to them.
I’ve tried writing this post a couple times, and it’s come out a dispassionate, confusing mess so far. Mainly because I was trying to remain neutral rather than telling it from my own perspective. Well, here it is from mine.
They say it takes 27 days to establish or break a habit. I bring this up because there are a couple habits I’d like to break, and a couple others I want to start.
