temporary setback

Nothing like having a 3 day weekend self destruct on the first day of the weekend.  At 10:30 on Saturday morning, I began experiencing sharp pains in my right abdominal region and back.  I thought my back had gone out, though I couldn’t figure out what exactly I had done that would cause it.  I took a bath and put on some muscle rub, but by noon or so I was dressed and headed for urgent care.

I went to the closest urgent care facility first, but with a one to two hour wait to see a doctor, I knew I needed to see someone a bit sooner than that.  So I managed to drive myself to the nearest actual hospital with a real ER.  After a CT scan, it was determined that I was passing a kidney stone - a rather small one, but a kidney stone nonetheless.  I was given some medication for the pain, a referral to a urologist, and sent about my business.  After a couple of cab rides, I had my medication and my car safely at home, where I could proceed to sleep off the effects of the medications I had been given.

Fortunately for me, I think the stone passed during the night.  I woke up Sunday morning feeling a bit hung over from the medication, but otherwise ok.  I managed to do a couple things that helped me shake off some of the effects, but it was pretty evident that my body was not used to the stress, and I didn’t do much Sunday besides sit around with minimal energy.

End result - I didn’t get to be with my friends Saturday as I’d planned, and I didn’t get to do any of the extra things I’d wanted to do since I had a long weekend.  Could have been worse though - could have happened on a Sunday, or during the week and then I’d really have had a hard time getting around.

I think the worst part may be knowing that I still have two kidney stones on the other side I haven’t tried to pass yet - maybe I’ll get lucky and they’ll dissolve before I try to pass them.  Although I still have all the medication they gave me for this one, I’m not looking forward to experiencing excruciating pain again.
