amusing criticism
I knew it was bound to happen sooner or later - I’ve attracted the attention of a troll. I knew when I started writing this blog that not everyone would agree with what I’ve written, and I’ve never been under the delusion that everyone would like me, and I’m ok with that. Since I write this blog for myself, really, I don’t care if anyone else likes it or not.
Paul Graham wrote an article I read recent, How to Disagree. Despite the troll’s ability to spell, the comments have fallen somewhere between DH0 and DH1, essentially personal attacks because the troll has a different set of beliefs than I do. Which is fine, this is America, people are entitled to believe what they want to believe, it’s part of what makes this country great.
After the first couple comments I received, I got a good laugh and was amused. The idea that one person who’s never met me is trying to tell me I’m completely wrong and I need help is pretty funny, at least, it is to me. But after the last couple, I really just feel sorry for the individual. It’s pretty clear the troll has read a lot of what I’ve written, amusing in it’s own right given how much the troll professes to disagree with me. I guess the thing that I pity most about the person - telling me to get a life when it’s clear the person doesn’t have one of his/her own.
Think about it for a minute. Who has less of a life - the person busy living, doing things and writing down thoughts on occasion, or the person following the first person around, telling the first person to get a life?
Even more sad, the troll went back to posts he/she submitted comments on to see if they’d been posted, and called me out on it. I deleted them since they don’t meet my standard for intelligent discussion, but the troll has taken this as a sign that I deleted them because he/she is right. As I said earlier, everyone’s entitled to their opinion. In this case, it just happens to be wrong.
Let me just state this for the record - if you disagree with me, fine. If you want to tell me that, fine. But if you expect me to discuss it, make it worth discussing. Personal attacks will get you nowhere. I have way too much to do to get into an argument with someone who’s idea of a discussion is you’re weird, get a life, whatever.
Have a nice day.
