a week without tv experiment, wrapup
My experiment of going without tv for a week ended on Monday morning, when I got out of bed. I managed to follow the rules I gave myself, and while my week was not 100% tv free, I am glad to report that my tv was on a grand total of 2.5 hours in 7 days.
I have easily surpassed that number already since the experiment has ended, but I did learn a few things and got more accomplished - a lot more. I read an entire book last week, Jakob Nielsen’s excellent Prioritizing Web Usability, which will come in handy for my new site that I expect to launch in the next 2 - 4 weeks.
As I was saying, I got a lot more accomplished, not staring at the tv screen every free moment. I found the experience to be rather freeing. I probably won’t limit myself to that little television going forward, but I have reduced the amount of tv I’m watching - I’m no longer watching tv just because it’s my default thing to do when I don’t want to do something else.
That week confirmed something I’ve suspected for a while now - we have just as much time as we used to - time doesn’t speed up, we just find things to fill it, then when it’s gone we act like we don’t know where it went. This will be the subject of a post or two to come.
