upgrading

I frequently tell people I run Linux at home, specifically Kubuntu, since I’m a KDE guy.    For you Windows users, Linux is a different operating system (os), and KDE is the desktop I prefer.  You see, unlike Windows, I get to tell my system what desktop to use, which determines how it’s laid out, what it looks like, and what features it has. Even better, most distributions of Linux, are absolutely free.  As is the software that goes on it.  Need a word processor?  No problem, it comes with OpenOffice, a fully functional office suite that can handle most Microsoft Office formats as well.  And adding additional software, again, all free, is a few simple steps, you just need to know its name.

the healing power of massage

Friday, March 28th, 2008

The martial art I practice has a healing art associated with it.  It goes by various terms - seifukujitsu, Okazaki Restorative Massage, Dan Zan Ryu Restorative Technique.  Whatever you choose to call it, it’s a form of Asian based body work.  Three years ago I was fortunate enough to go through the first of four modules and learned the fundamentals of Traditional Chinese Medicine, anatomy and physiology, history, ethics, and of course, the basic form.

change and non-attachment

For almost four weeks I’ve been posting my daily eating habits and measurements on this blog, thinking that might make a difference in sticking to a raw food diet and motivating me to exercise or go to jujitsu class.  After an unexpected visit from my girlfriend and totally going off my menu, I reflected over the last four weeks and reached the conclusion that this just isn’t working.

Thursday, March 13th, 2008

My experiment of going without tv for a week ended on Monday morning, when I got out of bed.  I managed to follow the rules I gave myself, and while my week was not 100% tv free, I am glad to report that my tv was on a grand total of 2.5 hours in 7 days.

After a serious blood sugar crash Monday during class, I’ve rebounded and managed to avoid eating any refined sugar or eating sweets at the wrong time that would cause those kind of problems again.  I’m sore after getting back to class again, which is to be expected, but I think we’ll both notice a difference in my measurements on Monday after this week.

fun with words

Saturday, March 8th, 2008

I was watching a movie last week, before my week without tv experiment started, the very bloody and epic Kill Bill Vol. 1.  A few days ago I was driving to work, thinking about the sequel, Kill Bill Vol. 2, and the scene where Elle Driver is reading to Budd as he’s lying on the floor, dying after being bitten by a snake.  She’s reading from a notebook and says the work gigantic - which she loves but rarely gets to use.  So this got me to thinking about words that I like but don’t use very often in day to day writing or conversation.

Well, Thursday, and especially yesterday, didn’t go quite as well as the rest of the week, and today has been kind of a wash. I’ve figured out a couple things that I want to share with you before I post the menus.
