someone or something you trusted beyond question or you just knew, that today was the last day of your life? Would you live differently than you are right now? What if it were a month from now? A year? What if somehow you knew exactly when and how you die, and you couldn’t change it? Would you still live the way you are now?

I thought I’d posted at least once since last Sunday, but I guess not. Exhaustion will do that to you. Samhain is only a three short days away… the Veil between the worlds continues to thin. Although Samhain is my favorite holiday, it is not without a bittersweet taste, having lost people and pets close to me. I know they’re close to me, thoughts of them come into my mind unbidden.

I mentioned about two or three weeks back that I got a new job, I started two weeks ago tomorrow. I spent the first week being not too happy, and last week, while it was better, still wasn’t what I would call stellar. In fact, I would say overall, the last couple of years haven’t really been that great, although things have been getting a lot better. Yesterday I was thinking about things, work and otherwise, and reminded myself of something I think is very important: I’m supposed to be where I’m at.

I have finished the Samhain ritual for this year. It’s very much like the one last year, in fact, it’s based on it. I decided that I didn’t want to water it down just so I could put it on the internet with a clean conscience, so I just tweaked it a bit. Last year I worked with some other people, so I changed the we/our references to I/my, and changed the heart of the ritual, since what we did last year wouldn’t make sense to do alone. Regardless, here is the ritual I will be doing Samhain night.

I wrote the first part of this at Riverbanks this past weekend, then finished it up last night and did some significant revision tonight. So without further ado, here is my latest piece.

Tonight there was a work function at a hotel downtown, an evening of a jazz with a local musician who has done a lot. I, along with three thousand (supposedly) of my co-workers and their spouses or friends, came to see it. I walked into the hotel, not thinking much about it, when I noticed a little bar/restaurant off to the side of the hall towards the area where the even was. I thought to myself, hey, that looks like the place we ate the day we had the witches’ ball when we were decorating place. It should look like it, because it was the place. I was back in the hotel where the witches’ ball was held almost 4 years ago.

I’ve been observing my behavior lately, and come up with some questions that are puzzling me a bit. When people are healthy physically, they are supposedly more resistant to illness and less bothered by physical circumstances than others. The same is true, supposedly, on emotional and mental levels as well: the healthier people are, they better they are able to handle life’s up and downs with minimal effect.

I can’t believe how insanely busy I’ve been the last week or so. Last week I started moving stuff out of my cube, bringing it home in preparation for starting my new job this past Monday, and I also started back to jujitsu class. With the fall clinic coming up at the beginning of next month, I have to get back into shape for it. So not only did I have new job prep going on, I had lots of soreness going on too.

Well, tomorrow I start my new job. I’m very excited about it: new challenges, new people, and a second chance to do things right. I knew it was right for me for a number of reasons: more money, less stress, and I’m starting on exactly my sixth anniversary of when I started working for the company. I took it as a good omen, a sign that I was supposed to make the move. There were a few things about my old job I didn’t care for, which I won’t go into here.

I went to Riverbanks Gardens on Thursday night for the last First Thursday of the season. I took a few good pictures, here’s one of them.
