intoxication

Weight update: this morning 186.6 lbs, 11.6 away from my goal, I’m headed in the right direction once again.

This morning I decided to visit one of my favorite places here, Riverbanks Gardens.  I love the feel of the woods there, walking down the path was very calming and soothing in a way no other place is, not even my home.  That wasn’t the best part of the visit though.  The rose garden is still in full bloom - I could smell it long before I could see it.

The rose is America’s favorite flower for a good reason I feel: not only is it beautiful, but some of them an unparalleled in their fragrance.  Today I discovered a variety of rose known as the noisette, an old world variety of roses that are extremely beuatiful and stronger in fragrance than any other rose I’ve smelled, enough to capture my attention from several feet away while in the middle of a rose garden when I’m not even looking in its direction.

i love the look of roses, but it’s their scent that really fascinates me.  When I hold a fragrant flower to my nose and inhale, for a moment the world stops and my whole world turns into the inhaled wine that is a rose’s scent.  I don’t know how to say it, other than to say that it’s a natural high that alcohol or drugs will never touch.  It only lasts a moment, but that moment lasts a lifetime, it seems.

I took some pictures in the rose garden, before I sat down.  There are some porch style swings in the garden, so I sat down on one for a while and just looked at the roses, breathed in their scent, and listened to the birds singing in the trees.  I took some pictures in the rose garden, and in a few other places too.  Quite by accident I stumbled across a gecko sunning himself on top of a plant, and he wound up in a couple of my pictures.  I think he was mating, for he displayed this orange pouch that he blew up under his chin, at least he did before I actually saw him.  Then when I saw him in the picture, he stopped doing it.  i couldn’t get him to do it while I was waiting, so I just had to take my shots and move on.

Speaking of intoxication, I may have found a new favorite fruit: pineapple.  Not the canned stuff that is alright, but fresh pineapple, newly cut and ripe.  I had no idea how good fresh pineapple really is.  I had no idea how good most fresh fruit really is.  I made my first fruit juice last weekend, and it was exquisite.  What comes from the store in a bottle just doesn’t compare; not only is fresh better for you, it tastes much better too.

Well, time to eat supper, watch a little more tv and off to bed.
