garden plans

Happy New Year!  2007 is going to be a great year for me, and I hope for you too.  i got on the scale this morning and weighed in at 183.8 lbs, 2 lbs less than last Monday.  At this rate, I’ll have reached my goal of 175 lbs by the beginning of February!  It’ll be interesting to see where my weight finally stabilizes.  On with the show.

This weekend I started planning and digging out the garden area for this year.  I didn’t get as I wanted because of intermittent rain the last couple days, but I got started.  These days when I start something, I usually finish it too, something I didn’t always do in the past.  As I said, I did get it started, and it’s a fairly sizeable area, 14′ x 14′.  So far I’m planning on the folowing flowers/vegetables/herbs in the garden: tomato, basil, oregano, garlic, chives, broomcorn, thyme, habaneros, onions, poblanos, jalapenos, lovage, cilantro, and vervain.  I’m still toying with the idea of growing some squash and pumpkins, but they’d have to be in a different area, 14 x 14 isn’t a lot of room to add those to and grow everything else.

It’s been almost 3 years since my last garden.  I didn’t realize how much I missed working with the earth until I started digging out my new garden a couple days ago.   It’s not like I’ve had a lot of spare time to take care of one though.  Of course, I may not really have the time to do it now, but I’m going to do it anyway.  I’ll just have to budget my time effectively.

Gardening always makes me think of Frances Hodgson Burnett’s book, The Secret Garden.  I haven’t read it yet, but I have two movie adaptations.  When I garden, I always think about the quote, “Where you tend a rose, thistle cannot grow.”  Obviously it’s not just gardening wisdom, but good advice on cultivating positive thoughts.  You cannot think positive and negative things at the same time.  My thoughts are one of my gardens, and I choose to plant good things in them.
That’s why 2007 is going to be a great year.  I’ve decided it’s going to be, and I won’t entertain thoughts otherwise.  Come what may, it is I who decides how I feel, act, and react to what’s happening, not someone else.  I choose to plant roses.
